Songs for teaching can help with the big question, how to motivate students. The songs are fun, helps to relax the atmosphere in the classroom to include both reading and listening skills, and tend to be fun! When students see their writing teacher in the classroom the tape in hand, they are suddenly very motivated to learn, especially when it comes to teaching ESL.
Songs teaching, ideally, follow a traditional lesson plan. Since incorporating both reading and listening skills, ESL teachers can weave these skills to their own lesson plans. By all means, this lesson plan is not exhaustive.
Early Lesson (Pre)
Songs of instruction must have a purpose for listening. It is the teacher to create this file. Here are some ideas for songs beginning lesson for teaching.
1. Display of works of art, such as teaching the song “Starry Starry Night”, as lead-ins.
Second Ask students to imagine what would the world be like in twenty or thirty years as a springboard for the song “Imagine” by John Lennon. Collect their answers by writing on the blackboard.
Third Give students a basic vocabulary of the song and ask them to predict what the song could be about.
Now it’s time to play the song. Make sure that the song was recorded on a tape of good quality. Using the CD at the end, much better. Have clear copies with a font large enough. When you choose a song that you like, avoid singers absorb words and select age-appropriate themes and texts. Use an attractive layout to enhance the visual side of your lesson plan.
